Yesterday I took a ride down the south jungle road towards Xcalak to visit some people and check out the Maya Luna eco-resort, and also look at Chan Raaj, another resort, and take some pictures of the mangroves and jungle. I have been on this road a bunch of times on my way back and forth from Xcalak when I stayed there last summer. Every time I rode the bus back and forth from Xcalak I noticed this little Catholic church and since I was on the bus early in the morning or late at night, I always wondered if it was an operational church or just an old deserted church.
When we drove by the church yesterday I noticed it was open, and I decided to take a look. Well I entered the little building and I was amazed to see candles burning, and incense in the air. There were three benches and some statues and the church was decorated just like a regular Catholic church, just on a much smaller scale. I was told that local people that pass by stop in to use it, and a lot of tourists stop and take pictures of it.
It was a quaint little church, and I took some pictures to show how little and cute this church is. I swear this church is about the size of tool shed in the USA. I hope you like these photos. Stewart Rogers (USA-South Carolina)
