While I have been in Merida this week, I have been staying at the Trinidad Hotel, a couple of blocks up from the Centro. The Centro part of town in Merida is where all the parks and plazas are, and the center of the tourist scene here.
The Trinidad Hotel is this cool old hacienda turned into a hotel, with gardens and big rooms. I stayed my first night in Merida at another hotel, but the internet was bad, it was crowded, the room was small, and stuffy. I had read and heard that of some of the hotels in Merida were former mansions and haciendas converted into hotels and bed and breakfast places. I was wanting to stay in one of those to get the real colonial Merida feel.
Well let me tell you, the Trinidad Hotel was exactly what I was looking for. At the cost of only 290 pesos, (about $20usd), I got this big room in the gardens, with open windows and doors, that has a good breeze. I have been in Mexico and Belize so long, I don’t even bother looking for a place with air conditioning anymore. There is great internet, in fact my room is where the router is. Best internet I have had in a while.
Here is a description off of their website. http://www.hotelestrinidad.com/

It is Monday, and I have been here since, Saturday, and I am really enjoying my stay here. There is free Continental breakfast, good hot water, and good restaurants right around the corner. It is also a couple blocks from the Cathedral, museums, art galleries, and theatres in Centro. It is also very safe here, and you can walk the streets at night by myself with no problems.
I am a big history buff, and I have felt like I stepped back in time staying here. I know a picture is worth a thousand words, so I am going to post some photos so you can see for yourself what I am talking about.
This place is so cool, I feel like I am in an old 1950s Humphrey Bogart, or Robert Mitchum movie, and I expect Ava Gardner or Lauren Bacall to walk into the hotel at any moment. I really do feel like I have stepped back in time here. That combined with all the museums, other colonial mansions, art galleries, stone streets, and all the classic architecture that I have seen really enhances my experience here in Merida.
So if you are like me, and really like history and culture, and you are planning a vacation or coming to Merida, the Trinidad Hotel is a hotel I think you will like. Nice friendly staff, (guy at front desk last night turned me on to the best spaghetti joint I have experienced in Mexico, 65 pesos, great meal), big rooms, art, gardens, great internet, quiet and tranquil, and just a short walk to all you want to see and experience in Merida.
