I Got a Football in Mahahual

My newe football, fresh from the USA.

As some of you regular readers may know, I wrote a post on this blog about a month ago about how I needed an American football down here in Mahahual. Well it got here last week, just in time for football season.

A good friend of mine, Jamie Meeks from Clinton, South Carolinal bought one on Amazon and had it shipped down here. It got down here pretty quick, about two weeks, and I had someone pick it up for me in Chetumal.

It got here just in time, football season starts tomorrow, with my South Carolina Gamecocks playing North Carolina on ESPN. We have been getting ready for football season down here throwing the football around on the malecon for the past week.

Last week we had 2 ships diverted here because of Hurricane Danny, and I was throwing the football around with some tourists off of the cruise ships. Some of the cruise ship tourists kind of gave me a funny look, like, “What is a guy in a South Carolina hat doing down here standing around throwing a football”? We get a lot of college football fans down here during the winter here, so this football may come in handy.

Saturday on the malecon I was throwing and kicking around the football with some of the young boys on the malecon. While we were on the malecon playing with the football, I noticed this 17 or 18 year old girl that is always kicking her soccer ball around on the malecon. I think her parents own the Veracruz store on the malecon. It is kind of like a convienece store, and I buy some things there from time to time. She works there, and lives there, and I have seen her kind of grow up the last 3 or 4 years. She is a good soccer player, I have seen her play on the athletic field in the center of town a couple of times. She is always on the malecon kicking her soccer ball around and practicing.

Well as we were playing with the football, the football bounced on down to where she was standing on the malecon with her soccer ball. She was standing there with her foot on her soccer ball, and had her phone in her hand texting. I have seen her kick a soccer ball half way down the malecon, so I was curious to see if she could kick an American football. So I asked if she wanted to try to kick it, she said yes. So I got down and held the ball for her so she could try to kick it, like for kicking a field goal. I swear she took 3 steps and kicked it straight and high down the malecon, nailed it. It would have been a 30 or 35 yard field goal, perfect right down the middle. Now this is the first time she has ever even tried to kick an American football, and what I found funny was she kicked a 35 yard field goal holding her cell phone in her hand, she just stepped up and nailed it, no practice or anything, dead solid perfect.

Football season is here on the malecon, and at the Tropicante now. Saturday, I took a couple if photos of “Chippy” and Danger playing “kill the man with the ball”. “Chippy” is a natural he can kick and tackle. What I am finding out is Mexicans can’t catch a football worth a damn. Even the Mexican men I have been throwing it to can’t catch. It bounces all around and hits them in the face and everything, funny, but they can all kick it pretty good.

I am going to put a little team together of the kids on the beach, and teach them to play American football. What was funny, last Saturday afternoon we were playing, and one of the young guys mother sent his sister to come get him to come eat dinner on the beach, they were having ceviche. He did not want to go, and wanted to keep playing. It kind of reminded me of my youth, when you got called home for dinner by your mother, but I never got called home for ceviche for dinner. I told me to go, I did not want his mother mad at me, and he sulked away.

chippy and Danger, seriously, that is there names, playing football on the malecon.

So football season is here, (I will be pulling for my South Carolina Gamecocks down here), which means more cruise ships will be arriving soon, and the “Snow Birds” will be heading down in a month or so. So it looks like I have lasted another “low” season, time seems to fly own here.

Good on you Stewart and your buddy who sent the football. Lisa and I had planned to bring one in October. We will bring another one for a spare.
