Semana Santa is in full swing here in Mahahual this week. Today we had three cruise ships, yesterday we had three ships, and we have two more tomorrow. Add that to the fact that we also have a lot of Mexican tourists in town for spring break and Easter week, means we are very busy and the town is full.
There are no hotel rooms, hostels, or anything availiable to rent at the moment, every place in town is full. There are also people camping, and sleeping in their cars, and more people are expected here this weekend.
As I left the maecon today to come home, they were setting up the stages on the malecon today for the live entertainment this weekend. The malecon has been full of people and tourists all week, and more coming each day.
I have been sitting in my chair on the beach and malecon just watching and taking it all in. I have noticed a lot of Mexican families in town this week enjoying the beach and atmosphere. You combine that with three cruise ships a day, and it makes for some very interesting people watching.
I watch the “Jimmy Kimmel” show on ABC almost every night, and he has a segment on his show called “Spot the foreigner”. In this segment he tries to pick the ‘foreign” tourists from the American tourists on Hollywood Boulevard. He only looks at their clothing and how they handle themselves without speaking. I have been doing this myself lately, I try to pick out the cruise ship tourists from the local or Mexican tourists on the malecon each day.. I am getting pretty good, and I can spot a “European” tourist right off the bat. The American cruise ship tourists are easy to pick out also, they are usually more overweight than the other tourists., and are usually sunburnt.
Here are some photos of all the action going on the malecon this week.
