I had a chance last week to meet the unofficial historian of Mahahual. His name is Sergio Benjamin Carbajal Rejon and he is a long time resident of Mahahual. He is also a teacher and college professor, and has taught at the University of Quintana Roo, in Chetumal, and several other schools and colleges.

He lives in the first house built in Mahahual, he says, and on his property behind his house is the first fresh water source in Mahahual, a well. The well was the first source of natural fresh water to the little hamlet of Mahahual, at that time.
