Funny story, this is Kane Jr. in his Gamecock shirt I gave him. His father is a waiter at the Tropicante, and they live on the malecon above the building next to the Tropicante. We were on the beach today, and I took him to the store on the malecon, Veracruz is the name of the store, to get him a sucker and some chocolate. I get him some candy every now and then. I let him pick out what he wants out of the candy jar at the counter. The store has like 1 or 2 peso priced candy in jars on the counter.
Well it was a slow day nobody in town, so we were standing there waiting on the woman to come to the cash register so I could pay her. Well after about a minute, Kane Jr. starts yelling at the woman who was in the back of the store eating lunch I think. Well he keeps yelling “hey”, and looking to the back of the store. A lot of the businesses here have living quarters in the back or above their store. I have learned, especially on a slow day on the malecon, just to be patient and they will come take your money eventually. (Trust me, during low season here, no one is in a hurry).
A lot of the time, the woman who owns the store, Veracruz, will be in the back making meals, or doing laundry or some other household chores, while the store is open. When she is doing this, she looks out and checks to see if anyone is at the counter every now and then. I shop there a lot, so I know the routine.
Well we are standing there and Kane Jr. keeps yelling “hey”, and every time he yells it, he gets louder. After about 5 or 6 “heys” at the top of his voice, the woman yells something back in Spanish from the back of the store in her living quarters. She then comes bursting out of the back through the curtain yelling at him to stop yelling at her in Spanish. The whole time I am just standing there with money waiting to pay. He tells her in Spanish to hurry up so he can eat his sucker. She then yells at him to be quiet, she is coming. I did not say a word, just paid, laughed and left.
Just another day in paradise on the malecon.
