I was on the beach today on the malecon at the Tropicante doing my cruise ship tourist routine. We have three ships this week, one yesterday, one today, and one tomorrow. I was sitting in my new chair on the beach with my South Carolina shirt and hat on, when a couple came up to me and mentioned they liked my shirt , and was I from South Carolina.
I told them, yes I was from South Carolina, and I graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1980. Well, they informed me that Fred, the husband was a professor of physcology at the University of South Carolina from 1975-2008, and was retired now. He said he still sees private patients, but retired from teaching in 2008. His wife, Marci, is retired from Midlands Tech in Columbia, where she was in administration. There names are Fred and Marci Medway, and they still live in Columbia, South Carolina.
We got to talking and we realized we know some of the same people, for instance Heisman Trophy winner George Rogers, and Phil Kornblut, a sportswriter, who I went to college with. I did not take a class from Fred while I was in school, he basically taught people in the PHD program. He did know some of my other professors I had, mainly my psychology of sex professor.
They had a great time on the beach today, and we talked for a while about Gamecock football, and the University of South Carolina. I told them of all the Gamecock fans I meet in Mahahual off of cruise ships every week, and they were surprised they met a Gamecock like me in Mahahual.
I told them about all the Gamecock fans who come up to me when they see me in my Gamecock attire, and ask me questions. (Funny I hardly ever see any Clemson fans down here, I guess it is hard to get the cows and goats on the cruise ship). I told them we get a lot of people from South Carolina off of cruise ships here.
They then told me they have been football season ticket holders for over 30 years, and go to every home game. They told me if any Gamecocks who read this article and blog want to see them on home games, they park in the ETV parking lot near the stadium, parking spaces 8 and 9. They said just show up, and they will provide the tequila, and told me to say from them…”Go Cocks”.
I am still surprised that here in the middle of the jungle, on the Mexican Caribbean, of all the Gamecock fans and supporters I meet here on a weekly basis off of cruise ships. I also met a Citadel graduate today who used to teach at West Point, and his wife went to the University of South Carolina.
So “Go Cocks” from the Medways, and stop by and see them next home game in Columbia.
