Google map exhaustively charts Maya sites

Here is a good article about all the Mayan ruins around here.  Some have been discovered, some have not.  I got this from I Go Yucatan. a business out of Merida, that is owned and operated by Alfonso Galindo, another expat from California.

Nearly 300 Mayan archaeological sites, some obscure and some famous, are tracked on this amazing interactive Google map that demonstrates how much remains to be explored.

Some archaeological sites are named, while others are simply numbered. The latter are the unrecognized sites that aren’t tourist attractions.

The map covers the Yucatán Peninsula and extends south into Tabasco, Chiapas, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.

Many appear to be surrounded by thick jungle brush. Paved paths won’t necessarily lead to any of the unnamed sites that await the more intrepid explorer.

The map is searchable and, as with any Google map, users can zoom in or out and grasp the awesome reach of ancient Maya civilization.

And these are just the sites we know about. Countless more still remain undiscovered and hidden from the public.
